Welcome to the first issue of our departmental electronic newsletter. Over the years we have mailed out newsletter issues and always enjoyed staying in touch with our graduates and our friends. We are going to try this e-newsletter and see how things go. If you know of someone who should be on our email list, please let us know. We anticipate sending out about two issues per year so we will not clutter your in-box. We want to share news from the department. You will see notes about our students (undergraduate and graduate), alumni, and faculty/staff.
It has been a great year so far. Our faculty and students were very visible at the annual meeting of the American Agricultural Economics Association. I will try to summarize a few of those activities at the end of this note. We have had three faculty members join us this year. Dr. Kellie Raper comes to us after being on the faculty at Michigan State University. Dr. Raper holds a PhD from Texas A&M University and works in the area of livestock economics. She has a joint research and extension appointment. Dr. Shannon Ferrell comes to us from private law practice in Oklahoma. He holds a JD from Oklahoma City University School of Law and an MS from Oklahoma State University. Dr. Ferrell holds a joint teaching and extension appointment and teaches our agricultural law course. Dr. Damian Adams joined us very recently. He holds a JD and PhD from the University of Florida. Dr. Adams holds a joint extension and research appointment and will work in the area of natural resources. These are three great additions to our department, and we are excited to welcome them. We are also pleased to welcome Daniel Skipper who has taken the position of Area Agricultural Economist in the Southwest District. Daniel holds an MS degree from the University of Arkansas and will be a great new member of the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service team.
I noted earlier that several faculty and students attended the American Agricultural Economics Association (AAEA) meetings held in Portland this past summer. The meetings were held jointly with the Western Agricultural Economics Association (WAEA). I think we had a very good showing across teaching, research, and extension functions. I wanted to share this with you:
- Count for organizers, presenters, moderators, discussants - Posters (3); Principle Papers (3); Selected Papers (13); Symposiums (13) - I counted names affiliated with OSU.
- AAEA Extension Section - Graduate Student Competition - led by Larry Sanders.
- AAEA Undergraduate Student Section Academic Bowl - led by Bailey Norwood.
- OSU Graduate Student Case Study Team - led by Brian Briggeman.
- OSU Undergraduate Student Section Paper Competition - led by Bailey Norwood, Brian Briggeman, and Clem Ward. All four OSU student papers were accepted for publication in the SS-AAEA Journal of Agricultural Economics.
- OSU Undergraduate Student Section Academic Bowl Team - coached by Bailey Norwood and Derrell Peel.
- Ross Pruitt (graduate student), Chair of the AAEA Graduate Student Section (GSS) for 2007-08.
- Carol Cook and Myriah Johnson (undergraduates) elected to be Secretary/Treasurer and Newsletter Editor for the SS-AAEA.
- Kim Anderson received the WAEA Award for Extension Program - Career.
Please take a look at our newsletter and let us know what you think. We value our connections with you and want to stay in touch. Our Agricultural Economics Department and Aggie-X Club Scholarships and Awards Banquet is scheduled for April 12, 2008 at 5 pm in the Wes Watkins Center for International Trade and Development (Stillwater). This is a great time to celebrate our students and we hope to see some of you there.
Finally, I want to thank Brooke Clay, Yulia Popova, Judy Rudin and Anna Whitney for their assistance in putting this newsletter together.
